The songs are all fairly consistent with no weak points, and the shorter runtime overall makes it a punchy, digestible listen as compared to the preceding album. He just has a shitload of conviction and sells these songs like the most talented and wily door to door salesman of all time, never deviating from his patented gritty sneer but packing a surprising amount of emotion into it. Dude was out of the music business for decades and I guess this preserved his soulful, raging howls like in cryogenic technology, awakened now as if no time had passed. And the band attacks the material with conviction, which makes it worth hearing. But as I hadn’t really been listening to their albums prior to this one, it doesn’t seem too worn out to me. It’s as straightforward a metal album as you’ll ever hear – maybe more conservative than I usually go for. There aren’t really any surprises here, from the chugging riffage and militaristic rhythms and the bitter, biting lyrical spewings. It’s pretty much a stodgy, meat and potatoes listen, without much to really make it stand out from the pack save for the fact that this is a legendary fucking band and Howe’s pipes grace it like molten goddamn steel. But in the wake of Mike Howe’s passing, I felt like I wanted to give ‘em more of a chance and I’m pretty glad I did.ĭamned If You Do is Howe’s swansong, I guess – the most recent album the band has put out back in 2018. I’d heard some songs here and there and thought they were fine but not really that great. Got to admit I hadn’t ever really paid attention to the later Metal Church albums.
