The same goes for any abilities you might use, which you can gain by completing different quests. You can interact with objects in the combat field, but even then it just feels too slow. I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of this style of combat. For any turn, you can either pass it to reserve your AP, or use the cover mechanic to increase your defences if you’re anticipating an attack. In combat, your character has an increasing amount of action points (AP) depending on which moves you make. However, it isn’t surprising when you consider the slower approach to storytelling and character interactions in the game. While combat itself isn’t as big of a part of the game, I think it’s turn-based nature will hold a significant value to potential owners. Of course, the presentation in Encased is more akin to the older Fallout games, and as such, I had to force myself through the few combat encounters I had. It takes a lot for such a system to show its appeal to me, and in certain cases, I can look past it, such as in Persona 5, due to every other element surpassing expectations.

Why? Well, having grown up on faster-paced action-oriented games, I've always found turn-based combat quite slow and, dare I say it, boring. Encased Combat and GameplayĬombat in Encased is of my least favourite kind: turn-based. It even has a Fallout-style perks selector, where you assign a predetermined number of points to different skills. The stats you pick in Encased are quite flexible, as your character class or "wing" doesn't define what abilities you can attain later in the game. Of course, I don't expect the in-game models to look as good as the avatar's carefully designed description, but it should at least look a little similar. The avatar and character designs are completely different, which is also a little infuriating. For one, certain changes in character's features don't reflect properly in the character view, and the lack of zooming functionality means that I can't see any smaller changes that I'm cycling through, such as earrings for example. The character creator in Encased is fairly standard, although it does have a few visual issues that I'm not sure are part of the design goal. After all, it lets you fully play out your own defined role within its world, complete with promises of alternate beginnings, endings, and evolving relationships with NPCs under the Dome. Okay, that last line sounds quite generic, but I can’t help it if the game’s primary setting is steeped in tropes of alternate history science fiction.īeing a role-playing game has many meanings these days, but Encased is of the kind that you would truly bestow upon the title of an RPG. The player takes the role of a new recruit at CRONUS, and being a role-playing game, it is up to the player to carve out how their story turns out to be in this mysterious organization where not everything is what they seem to be. Scientific interest in the quarantine zone gave rise to a megacorporation called ‘CRONUS’, which controls all research going in and out of the Dome.
